Somersby Energy Reserve is a 40 MW fast-start peaking plant using high-efficiency gas engines. It will provide on-demand capacity to stabilise the grid during peak periods and support the transition to cleaner energy.

By firming weather-dependent wind and solar, Somersby Energy Reserve will help maintain reliability on hot summer evenings and calm winter mornings when renewable generation is low.

The location was selected due to proximity to the Somersby 132kV sub-station and a high-pressure gas pipeline that runs past the site. Somersby Energy Reserve will be engineered to meet stringent environmental and noise standards.

Built for flexibility, the plant can ramp from standby to full output in 120 seconds as conditions change. Its modular engine configuration allows individual units to start and stop as needed, improving efficiency and reducing fuel use when partial output is required.

The project is currently in the planning stage and is expected to be operational in 2027/28.
