Playford Energy Reserve is a 40 MW fast-start peaking plant using high efficiency reciprocating gas engines in northern Adelaide. It will provide on-demand capacity to stabilise the grid during peak periods and supports South Australia’s leadership in renewable energy.

Built for flexibility, the plant can ramp from standby to full output in 120 seconds as conditions change. Its modular engine configuration allows individual units to start and stop as needed, improving efficiency and reducing fuel use when partial output is required.

By firming weather-dependent wind and solar, Playford Energy Reserve helps maintain reliability on hot summer evenings and calm winter mornings. Renewable energy and batteries do the heavy lifting while Playford Energy Reserve is there to plug the gaps when needed.

The facility has a compact footprint and is engineered to meet stringent environmental and noise standards. The project is under development and expected to be operational in 2028.
